Our Tips On The Top 10 Things To Do BEFORE Your
Next Houseguests Arrive

1 )  CLEAN ROOMS & DECLUTTER

This may seem like a no brainer, but inviting your guests into a freshly cleaned home is a great way to start.  Besides the normal dusting and vacuuming, include a game of “hide the clutter.”  Hiding away the everyday items you may normally leave out, brings a sense of calm to not only you but your guests, showing them that you care to create an inviting environment for them.  Try decorative storage options such as these below, to hide unsightly electronics or valuables you don’t want displayed.

To help keep things cleaner a little longer, we use this homemade dust repellent, that keeps the dust away a little bit longer, and leaves a clean fresh scent!

2 ) PERSONALIZE THEIR ROOM

We love creating a home away from home for our guests.  One way we do this is by adding personalized items such as photos, gifts, or items that are from them.  To keep it simple, we add frames to our guest room nightstands, adding pictures of our soon to be houseguests.  If you typically have the same members visiting, you can keep a pictures in your frame, and rotate the photographs when it’s their turn to visit.  These picture frames from Target are the perfect way to inexpensively incorporate this idea on dime!

3 )  SUPPLY CLEAN TOWELS

We like to go the extra mile and add clean fresh towels (body, hand, and face) in our houseguest’s room or guest bath.  If you have a few extra minutes, we like to tie them altogether with a ribbon and add a sprig of rosemary or greenery.  This not only shows you care, but also alleviates people searching through your cabinets and drawers!  We suggest if you’re in need of some new matching towel sets – check out HomeGoods, where they tend to have hotel style brands at a fraction of the cost.

4 ) MAKE THEIR BED FOR THEM

Similar to cleaning the house, this may seem like a no brainer again – but providing clean fresh sheets in a well dressed bed can really make your guests feel at home.  Additionally, if your spare bed consists of an air mattress – try and get ahead of your guests arrival, and blow it up beforehand.  Add sheets, blankets, bed pillows and even a few throw pillows to make it look nice and cozy for them!  Air mattresses can be less then inviting, so adding these small details really help!

5 ) ADD SUBLTE FRESH SCENTS

Besides cleaning up their room, make sure their room smells inviting.  We suggest using fabric sprays or room sprays, but make sure the scents you choose are not too overpowering.  The idea is soft and fresh.  Our go to room spray is from Target’s Hearth & Hand Line here.

6 ) GIVE THEM ROOM

If the room they will be staying in has a closet – try and empty out some space so they can make room for their belongings.  If that isn’t an option, we suggest grabbing an inexpensive luggage stand so they have a dedicated spot and easy access to retrieve their belongings. Here are a couple cute and inexpensive options that are Dwelling Envy Approved!

7 ) STOCK UP ON TOILETRIES

Its inevitable that when you travel, you pack, unpack, repack, but almost always forget something! To alleviate a bit of this stress, add a small basket of essential toiletries.  Some items we try to have on hand include: deodorant, lotion, mouthwash, floss, toothbrush, shampoo, soap, and perfume/cologne. Leave it in their room or guest bath as a way to take the stress out of traveling and packing!

8 ) PROVIDE MORNING ESSENTIALS

Mornings can be a tricky time of day for both you and your houseguests.  Between time changes, and personally preferences, you may find you and your guests are on different schedules.

Leaving out morning essentials such as coffee mugs,  granola bars, fruit, tea bags and coffee is a nice way to accommodate for varying wakeup times.  This gives you the flexibility while still considering and anticipating what your guests may need.  We love adding a bit more personalization by providing our guests with their own coffee mugs they can use during their stay and take home with them to keep. If you’re looking for even more mug ideas, you can check out more on our LTK Shop here.

9 ) LAYOUT COMFORTABLE BEDDING

Not always, but typically, a spare room or guest room, will have an older mattress that has outlived its usefulness as your primary bed.  Though it may be fine for guests to sleep on a night or two, make it extra comfy for them by adding an inexpensive mattress topper.  This trick also works wonders for air mattresses.  This is a great and inexpensive option from Amazon with amazing ratings.

10 ) MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM

Lastly, it’s important to remember this is your home, not your guests. So certain things may be harder on them than you anticipate.  For instance, navigating around in the dark late at night in an unfamiliar place.  Adding a plug-in nightlight in your hallways will help make those late night bathroom trips a bit easier.  We love this industrial chic option we found at Walmart.

We all have those TV’s that have 3 different remotes that do 3 different things.  Take a minute to write down how to properly operate the electronics around the home your guests may use.
