5 Affordable Items We Used to Trim Our Tree

Date

Hi Guys,

We got a lot of questions recently on how we decorated our tree for the holidays, so, in keeping up with the holiday spirit, we wanted to give you access to some of the affordable items we’ve personally used for decorating our tree, and provide you with an easy guide for the our 5 MUST HAVES for trimming your tree properly.

If you haven’t checked out our Holiday Decor Trend blog, be sure to check that out here first, as it gives you the full inside scoop on our design direction for this years tree.

Please note, the following images contain links to actual products to which you can purchase directly.  These products may contain affiliate links, meaning DEI may gain a small commission on all sales at no additional cost to you!

1. The Tree

First things first, picking out the right tree.  Now, we normally have a faux tree for the main living room area for several reasons.  1) We’re a early riser family with our tree, and a real tree just wouldn’t live long enough to survive. 2) We celebrate Orthodox Christmas as well, so our tree has to survive until January 7th!  That being said, we are all about getting the real deal, but for those of you who are like us, or just don’t want to deal with pine needles everywhere.  We found some pretty beautiful selections this year as we shopped this year.  We chose this one from Home Depot, but there were a lot of favorites we found this year!  I would have loved to go a little sparser (keeping with the 2021 Trend) but this tree really is beautiful and full and required little to no adjusting when we took it out of the box!

2. The Garland

Its always a great idea to have some sort of barrier / filler on the tree before you hang your ornaments.  In years past, we’ve used heavily decorative ribbons, but this years trend is really focused on more natural elements like wood, jute, or wool strands.  We found a few different style wood strands and layered them together throughout our tree.  It was a project in itself, and took a lot of moving, adjusting, and readjusting until we felt it looked done.  We found Walmart to have some pretty decently priced options, so we grabbed about  6 – 7 boxes of assorted 12′ long garlands.  We couldn’t find our exact options, but have very similar look and price points to what we purchased for our own tree below.

3. Ornaments

For this year’s ornaments, I played with beiges / creams browns, and greens that already exist in my living space.  I stayed away from the traditional holiday colors (sorry) and opted to keep it neutral and natural.  My main inspo for these colors were Studio McGee’s Velvet Ornaments sold at Target that for the life of me could not buy fast enough and were sold out the minute they were available online.  So plan B was to find some alternatives.  We got lucky at Hobby Lobby and found awesome sets in similar hues.  Unfortunately those options aren’t available online, so we’ve found some very similar options that we recommend and equally love.

4. Tree Topper

If you read our Holiday 2021 Trend Guide, you read all about  Capiz Shells.  From ornaments to tree toppers, they’re #trending this season.  I scored this beautiful, inexpensive, and “on trend” tree topper at Walmart for a steal at $11.99!  What I love about our is it DOESN’T have lights, which gives it a much more organic/ natural feel and keeps the aesthetic less overly “blinged – out.”  Another Favorite we found is from Crate & Barrel and is really reasonably priced at $29. If lights are your thing, we suggest this Capiz Sputnik option we found on Amazon.

5. Tree Collar vs Tree Skirt

And lastly, we can’t forget about the bottom of the tree.  I’ve been a tree skirt gal for years, however, with our new home, I wanted to change it up a bit.  Our main tree is  between our dining and living room areas, so I felt a skirt here would take up too much additional square footage on the floor, and that was ultimately the deciding factor for us.  I ended up doing a copper color because I had a lot of beige hues in the room, and that helped bridge the gap and worked well with the warm wood tones in the garland and green/brown/white color scheme in the ornaments.  Pro Tip ->  If you find there is a gap between your collar and tree stand, add some fabric inside the collar.  We experienced this gap with ours, and we repurposed our old tree skirt as a filler, “waste not, want not.”
