5 Mistakes That (Almost) Everyone Makes Decorating Their Home

Date

When it comes to decorating your space, we know it can be a bit overwhelming! Often times, you may find yourself down a “rabbit hole” when browsing your local retailers, and end up with some common “faux pas” among the Interior Design world.  Below we’ve listed our Top 5 Common Decorating Mistakes and our Design Help on how to Level Up your home, just like a designer!

1. Using Only a Comforter/Duvet and Pillow Cases for Your Bedding

Using matching bedding sets without adding a break in-between them is a huge faux pas.  To give your bedding a more luxurious look, break up your bed set by adding additional colors, patterns, and textures with the use of accent pillows, throw blankets, and sheets.  The key is to play with pieces that pull together a cohesive statement without being too matchy-matchy.

2. Signage of Any Kind

Whether they are hung on the walls or placed on a shelf, signage of any kind can instantly cheapen a home’s appeal.  We suggest removing any and all of these signs, and focus more on adding items that provide a more personal and sentimental value instead.  For instance, instead of a sign that says “Kitchen” add a framed handwritten recipe from a loved one.  You don’t need a sign that says “Gather” when you add a gallery wall featuring photos of those special to you. These ideas add more character and value to your home than a sign ever will.

3. Matching Dining Room and / or Bedroom Sets

Purchasing matching dining and/or bedroom sets has increasingly become an outdated concept.  Having all items in matching finishes gives off an uninspiring and uninteresting, showroom vibe.

To create a more inspiring look to your bedroom or dining room, mix up the colors, textures, and finishes of your pieces.  For instance, if you choose a darker wood table or nightstand, opt for chairs or a bed in a lighter finish or try incorporating a new texture such as upholstery or metal instead.  By mixing up the elements and textures you use, you create a more eye catching and interesting design.

4. Over Decorating

We’ve all heard the phrase “less is more” and that holds true when it comes to a well designed space. Over decorating a room creates visual noise, and it distracts our eyes from really focusing in on anything.

For instance, if you find your room is over cluttered with family photos on every surface, you’re not able to really appreciate the furnishings or the photos.  They become more of a distraction to the eye than an appealing decorative accent.  Instead of letting your photos collect dust, we suggest creating a coffee table book with them instead.  This will declutter your surfaces and allow guest to pay proper tribute to your loved ones while flipping through the pages.

Filling up every inch of your wall space is another way to cheapen the look of your home. Instead, create a visually appealing story by adding larger statement pieces to one key wall.  This draws the eyes in, and creates a better balanced design.

5. Taking a Decorative Theme Too Literal

Taking a decorative theme too literal is the difference between a design cliche and a well designed home.

For instance, when incorporating a coastal theme, avoid using products that directly involve seashells, fish, or anchors.  Instead, opt to incorporate coastal elements and materials that remind you of the coast, such as linen and burlap textiles, serene blue and green colors, and sand textured ceramics.

If you’re going for a Modern Farmhouse look, stay away from decorating with barnyard animals.  Instead, try finding furnishings or accent pieces made of reclaimed wood. Be sure to blend modern and vintage/antique pieces together, and don’t be afraid to mix metals.  These are design elements that will give your home a much better appeal while avoiding the common cliches.
